Hegelhaus is the house in which philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in 1770 and lived for the following 18 years. Part of the exhibition charts the life and work of Hegel, from his years in Stuttgart through to his death in Berlin in 1831, setting the biographical details in a historical context to significant events of the time. Another part of the exhibition is entitled ‘Stuttgart at the Time of Hegel’ which provides a historical record of late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth century Stuttgart.

Founded in 1884 and moving to its present location in 1911, the collection of the Linden, the German Museum of Ethnology, spans every continent. Named after Count Linden, one of its earliest patrons who died shortly before the opening of the new museum, the collection reflects the growing interest in non-European cultures sparked by the increase in international commerce of the late nineteenth century. One of the Linden’s most impressive displays features a full-size reproduction of an Islamic bazaar in which original artefacts are exhibited.
