Booker T. Washington National Monument is a memorial to a former slave who rose to national and international fame as an educator, speaker, and controversial black leader. To recreate the sights, sounds and smells of Booker’s boyhood, a mid-1800’s tobacco plantation has been reconstructed. During the summer months, uniformed rangers and costumed interpreters tell the story of mid-19th century Virginia and the impact it had on the life and accomplishments of Booker T. Washington. Crops and farm animals are also part of the living historical farm scene which the visitor may see from the 1/4-mile self-guiding Plantation Trail.
