Roanoke Regional Airport
Roanoke Regional Airport, originally established as Roanoke Municipal Airport, is a public airport located about 3 miles outside of the city of Roanoke, Virginia. The airport’s roots date back to WWI as a small airline with one dirt runway. Roanoke has since grown into one of the largest and most frequently flown airports in the region.
History of the Airport
In its early years, the airport was strapped for funds. Due to the poor conditions, a number of airlines refused to fly. Finally, in 1941, Roanoke Regional was placed under federal authority so that funds could be released to complete its construction. Shortly thereafter, the airport was officially named Woodrum Field, in honor of Virginia Congressman Clifton A. Woodrum.
After the old terminal was demolished in 1989, the airport built a multi-million dollar Y-shaped terminal. The terminal was enlarged to accompany the growing number of visitors to Roanoke Regional. The terminal has 2 levels. The bottom level has ATMs, telephones, data ports, and vendors. The top level has the security gates, ATMs, telephones, newspaper stands, and cafe. The airport has 2 asphalt runways–one measures 6,800 feet and the other 5,810 feet. The runways have been refurbished to eliminate runway incidents.
Roanoke Regional has a number of services to make the passenger’s travels as stress free as possible. Airport ambassadors are strategically located in the airport to answer all questions and concerns. The ambassadors are trained in all areas of airport operations. The visitor’s center is stocked with brochures, maps, and information about the airport and the surrounding area. Wheelchair bound passengers have accessible parking, elevators, and escorts to and from the plane.
A pet relief area is available for passengers to exercise their pets and let them get in a good stretch before a long flight. The grassy area has a number of plastic bags and trash cans to dispose of pet droppings. Some areas of the airport offer free WiFi service. This gives passengers the opportunity to check emails, surf the Internet, or take care of other business. It should be noted that the service should be used at the passenger’s discretion. Passengers are advised to familiarize themselves with the security measures that are strictly followed at the airport. Bringing items that are prohibited may result in your flight being delayed.
