Richmond International Airport

Overview

The Richmond International Airport is located in Sandston, Virginia, less than 5 miles from the greater city of Richmond. The airport was initially established in 1927 as Richard Evelyn Bird Flying Field, but was officially changed to its current name several years later. The airport is one of the busiest in Virginia, as it is located in one of the most populated areas on the East Coast. Over 3 million travelers pass through the Richmond airport yearly. The Capital Region Airport Commission currently owns Richmond International, and is responsible for all of the airport’s operations. The self-sustaining airport relies on a steady stream of revenue from terminal fees, parking, concession fees, and fees from other vendors to keep it running smoothly.

Richmond Airport Growth

Richmond International has three asphalt runways, with the longest measuring 9,003 feet and nearly 150 feet across. The airport has undergone a $300 million expansion in recent years to accommodate the growing number of airport visitors. The airport now has an upper and lower deck, with Concourse A and Concourse B. The airport also increased its gate size to 14, expanded the baggage and claims area nearly 9,000 square feet, and added over 1,300 parking spaces. In 2007, Richmond completed another multimillion dollar expansion with a complete overhaul of the terminal building, which freed up additional space for security checkpoints and curbside loading/unloading. The airport is now more functional, sleek, and modern.
