Overview

The Richmond International Airport is located in Sandston, Virginia, less than 5 miles from the greater city of Richmond. The airport was initially established in 1927 as Richard Evelyn Bird Flying Field, but was officially changed to its current name several years later. The airport is one of the busiest in Virginia, as it is located in one of the most populated areas on the East Coast. Over 3 million travelers pass through the Richmond airport yearly. The Capital Region Airport Commission currently owns Richmond International, and is responsible for all of the airport’s operations. The self-sustaining airport relies on a steady stream of revenue from terminal fees, parking, concession fees, and fees from other vendors to keep it running smoothly.

Richmond Airport Growth

Richmond International has three asphalt runways, with the longest measuring 9,003 feet and nearly 150 feet across. The airport has undergone a $300 million expansion in recent years to accommodate the growing number of airport visitors. The airport now has an upper and lower deck, with Concourse A and Concourse B. The airport also increased its gate size to 14, expanded the baggage and claims area nearly 9,000 square feet, and added over 1,300 parking spaces. In 2007, Richmond completed another multimillion dollar expansion with a complete overhaul of the terminal building, which freed up additional space for security checkpoints and curbside loading/unloading. The airport is now more functional, sleek, and modern.

Passenger Services

Richmond International has a number of services to make the flier’s time at the airport as stress free as possible. The airport has an interfaith chapel and a number of ATMs. The Visitor’s Center is staffed with a number of friendly professionals who can answer all your questions about the airport and provide information about the city of Richmond and the surrounding areas. Free WiFi service is available at a number of areas throughout the airport. The facility is well equipped for passengers who have disabilities. The airport has handicapped parking, wheelchair access, convenient elevators, restrooms with doorless entries, and passenger escorts. Richmond International has a USO Center that welcomes active and retired military and their dependents. The center is staffed by volunteers who are extremely helpful in taking care of the men and women who serve our country.

Parking & Transportation

Richmond International offers a wide number of parking options that are safe and convenient. The airport has daily parking with over 7,000 spaces located right across from the main terminal. Hourly parking is available and the first hour is free. Economy parking is the most convenient option for travelers who will be away for several days. There are over 3,000 spaces reserved for economy parking and the rates are reasonable. Valet parking is optional and can be pre-arranged by contacting the airport. Easypark shuttle service comfortably transports passengers to and from economy lots every 15 minutes. A number of taxis can be found at curbside. For travelers needing rental cars, there are many companies to choose from such as Hertz, Alamo, Enterprise, Dollar, and Avis.

Airlines Serving Richmond Airport

Located in Virginia’s third largest city, Richmond International Airport is served well by some of the biggest names in the North American airline business. Baggage claim carousels for all of the flights are located in the First Level of the terminal. The ticket counters and both concourses are located on the Second Level of the terminal. Additionally, some airlines even offer curbside check-in services near the road that passes by the terminal’s second floor.

American Airlines links Richmond International Airport with one of the few southern domestic destinations that are offered at the airport. Based in Fort Worth, this major airline offers non-stop flights to the company’s home at the Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport, which is the busiest airport in the state of Texas. Additionally, the American Airlines affiliate American Eagle offers direct trips to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Miami International Airport. American Airlines service is offered at the Concourse A gates at Richmond International Airport.

Delta Air Lines operates the busiest schedule at Richmond International Airport. This major domestic airline links Virginia’s third biggest city with some of the busiest airports on the East Coast and the Midwestern region. Delta offers daily flights to the two main airports in New York City, which are JFK and LaGuardia.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County airport, and St. Paul/Minneapolis International Airport are part of the Delta schedule that’s available at Richmond International Airport. Additionally, the Delta trips to Atlanta is the busiest route at the airport. More than a quarter of a million Richmond passengers each year use Delta to fly to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Georgia’s largest city. Concourse B is where you can board on your Delta flights.

Thanks to JetBlue Airways, passengers at Richmond International Airport can enjoy low-cost airfare to popular destinations on the East Coast. By offering flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, JetBlue Airways invites tourists into the Miami area and Walt Disney World Resort. This busy low cost airline uses the gates at Concourse B.

United Airlines operates the second busiest schedule at Richmond International Airport. Based in Chicago’s main airport, this major airline offers non-stop flights to O’Hare International Airport. United Airlines also takes passengers to the company’s domestic hubs in Cleveland, Houston, Newark, and District of Columbia. The United Airlines fleet waits for passengers in Concourse B at Richmond International Airport.

Based in Concourse A at Richmond International Airport, US Airways offers flights to Boston, Charlotte, and Philadelphia.
