Recife International Airport
The Recife Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport is located 11km, or approximately seven miles, from downtown Recife. Recife is the fifth largest metro area located in Brazil. Over 3.7 million people live in the city and its surrounding vicinities. Recife is the largest state of Pernambuco. The airport was originally called the Ibura Airport, but its name was changed in 1948. The current name is taken from the battle of Guararapes, which was fought near the airport. Historical sociologist Gilberto Freyre was honored with his name in the airport, as well. The current annual capacity for the airport is five million per year.

They built a new and larger parking area for the airport in 2002. The company also upgraded and rebuilt the passenger terminals in 2004. In 2009, they released plans to give the facility a major upgrade. They decided to concentrate on the upcoming 2014, FIFA World Cup Series, which will be played in Brazil. Recife will be one of the main revenues for the popular games. These upgrades have helped the airport get ready for the large upcoming event. After the renovations, the airport became known for the art it currently hosts. They also host exhibits for many unknown local artists in the hall area.

The Airport offers many conveniences for local and international travelers. The food centers are conveniently located for easy access to passengers traveling through the airport. There are two coffee shops that remain open 24 hours. The airport has a bookstore, which is also available at all times for its customers. The airport has many car rental agencies, to effectively meet the needs, of any traveler desiring a rental car. The airport has over 150 shops and restaurants to meet all of their customer’s expectations. There are fifteen boarding bridges, which link the terminal to the gates.
The airport has 64 check-in desks to provide fast and easy arrivals and departures for all passengers. The newly renovated parking garage has four stories. However, only the bottom three are used for parking. The fourth floor holds exhibits and expositions throughout the year. There are 26 positions for airplanes to dock. The total parking for the garage is over 2,000 spaces. The parking garage has direct access to the passenger terminal. This provides a safe environment for all of their customers. Famous artwork from artists such as, Francisco Brennand and Abelardo da Hora are displayed throughout the airport.
