Manston Airport is a small airport located about 20 kilometers northeast of Canterbury in Kent, England. This prime location offers visitors convenient access to ports located near Dover and Ramsgate.

Manston Airport is also known as Manston, Kent’s International Airport by locals who have lived near the airport for many years. This alternative name is used by locals to celebrate the airport’s service to international visitors.

Manston Airport’s facilities are located on a parcel of land that measures nearly 300 hectares. This space is large enough to accommodate up to four B747 jets efficiently. It is also large enough to accommodate up to five modern cargo jets.

History of the Airport

The airport’s history can be traced back to World War I when Britain’s Royal Flying Corps constructed a landing strip near what are now the airport’s parking structures. It was used primary for emergency landings and training exercises.

The Royal Flying Corps converted the landing strip into an airfield during the 1920s and 1930s. The airfield’s main features included a paved runway that is still used today. Travelers can see remnants of the airfield’s original hangars when they visit the airport’s customs building that is located west of the main entrance.

The airfield was used during World War II as a landing site for American, Australian, British and Canadian military planes. Many of the planes that landed at the facility during World War II were heavy bombers that sustained damage during aerial combat.

The airfield was converted into a municipal airport by Britain’s Royal Air Force in 1988 after many years of use as a Cold War training center. The Royal Air Force sold the airport to a group of investors in 1999 after local residents demanded a change in the airport’s maintenance program.

The airport was expanded during the 2000s to accommodate increases in commercial and passenger traffic. The expansion featured the construction of an upgraded passenger terminal that offers services to nearly 300,000 clients each year.

Airport Facilities

The airport’s passenger terminal is a modern structure that measures 2,800 square meters. It is located about one kilometer west of the village of Cliffsend. It is open each day from about 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. It houses the airport’s welcome center, customs hall, baggage claim area and immigration center.

These facilities are located along a square path around the airport’s main concourse. Travelers can simplify their search for these facilities by searching for red signs located on top of the concourse’s ceiling that point to each facility’s location.

The airport’s main concourse is located between the airport’s main entrance and main security checkpoint. These areas are open each day from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Travelers are required to undergo a random search of their belongings before they are allowed to pass through the security checkpoint. As a result, many locals recommend arriving at least 90 minutes before your scheduled departure time to avoid any unnecessary delays.

Manston Airport’s rental car facility is located west of the airport’s main security checkpoint. It is open each day from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. Passengers can simply continue their travels to the rental car facility by using the airport’s walkway that connects the terminal to the airport’s rental car facility.

The airport also houses two museums that celebrate the airport’s history. They are located about 500 meters east of the airport’s terminal. They are open each day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some of the museums’ highlights include photographs and artifacts that describe the airport’s role during World War II. Be sure to take one of the tours offered by the airport’s welcome center to learn more details about the facility’s role as a training center during World War II.

Airport Parking

Manston Airport features three parking structures that are located east of the airport’s terminal. They are open each day from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. They offer travelers short-term and long-term parking options that can help you take the guesswork out of parking your car in Kent. Passengers can purchase tickets to use at the parking structures by visiting one of the ticket kiosks located in front of each parking structure.
