Malmo Airport, located in Svedala Municipality, is situated near the cities of Lund, Copenhagen, and its primary service city, Malmo. The airport is Sweden’s fifth busiest, serving almost 2 million passengers per year. Additionally, Malmo Airport serves as a supplement to the much larger Copenhagen Airport in the event of heavy congestion and weather problems.
As constituted, Malmo Airport, formerly Malmo-Sturup Airport, is made up of one passenger and two cargo terminals. There are two active runways including a 9,000 ft. runway for larger jet aircraft and a shorter 2,600 ft. runway.
Malmo Airport was completed in 1972 to replace the Bulltofta Airport, which had been in operation since 1923. The population explosion in the region dictated the need to construct an aircraft from scratch, and despite cost overruns, the new airport was completed in only two years.
Currently, in addition to catering to a number of low-cost, budget airlines, Malmo Airport also serves as home to a number of cargo enterprises, charter airlines, and Braathens Technical. The last is an aircraft maintenance company, which makes Malmo Airport its main base of operations.
There are a number of services available at Malmo Airport including ATM cash machines and a currency exchange. Additionally, several Internet terminals are offered before and after the security checkpoint and up to 3 hours of free Wi-Fi is also available. For business travelers, a conference room can be booked in advance.
Travelers with a variety of special needs can also rely on Malmo Airport to provide a number of helpful options. Persons with limited mobility or in wheelchairs can take advantage of an escort staff that will meet them outside the aircraft. Service is then provided through any passport needs, baggage claim, and to the next pick up point, connecting aircraft, or other transport option.
Children traveling alone or with an adult are also well looked after at Malmo Airport. Children traveling by themselves are escorted and given special assistance throughout their boarding or departure. For families, Malmo Airport offers a playground, strollers available for loan, and numerous baby changing rooms in both the men’s and women’s bathrooms.
In addition to the “normal” airport facilities, functions, and amenities, Malmo International Airport also offers several interesting services not advertised at most airports. Among these, perhaps the two most interesting are an option to help the airport remain Carbon neutral by purchasing a CO2 offset, and the option to get married in a civil or private ceremony in the airport.
Transportation & Parking
There are a number of transportation options to and from Malmo Airport by way of the E65 from Malmo or Copenhagen and Road 108 from Lund or Trelleborg. Airport shuttle buses run from directly outside the passenger terminal to downtown Malmo or Lund and take about 40 minutes. To Copenhagen, options include a Grahundbus coach or a train connection in Malmo or Lund.
Taxis and rental cars are also options at Malmo Airport. A taxi stand is available outside the passenger terminal, while taxis booked in advance can be met near the baggage claim. In both cases, while the fee to Malmo varies between companies, each taxi company does offer a set rate. As for rental car companies, rental offices of major domestic and international companies are available near the multistory car park.
Meanwhile, parking a car at Malmo Airport is simple with four car parks to choose from. In addition to the multistory car park, 3 outdoor parks also offer a variety of stay options from hourly to long term. A fifth car par across from the terminal is also used for short term parking of up to four hours.
