History of London Stansted Airport
STN officially opened its doors in 1943 under the name of Stansted Mountfitchet as an airfield on a site that was at one time a roman burial. BAA Airports took control in 1966 and started facilitating holiday charter flight services. In 1969, the 1st terminal was officially opened and in 1988, construction began to further expand the airport. The newly improved airport was completed in 1991 and this year marked a very special occasion for STN, as this was the year that the Queen herself paid a visit to mark the opening of the newly improved airport. STN gained recognition around the globe as it became the world’s most modern airport to date. In August 2007, the airport reached a major milestone and experienced its busiest summer in history serving 2.5 million customers.
Today, London Stansted is the newest airport in and around London with all inclusive terminals that offer currency exchange services, internet access, lounges, bathing facilities and even a chapel with a room dedicated to prayer. The airport features a multitude of shops, restaurants, and many other dining options. STN also features an air traffic control tower which happens to be one of the tallest in the United Kingdom and has many cargo buildings and hangars.
The London Stansted Airport offers a variety of transportation options to its customers, including a state of the art railway station that is conveniently situated right below the terminals and connects the airport to London as well as the other major cities. Coach service, a bus station and taxi service is also available within the airport.

The airport served an impressive 17.4 million customers in 2012 with more than 131,000 aircraft takeoffs and landings that very same year. In addition, the airport transported more than 209,000 tons of cargo in 2012.
The London Stansted Airport facilitates flights to more than 150 destinations worldwide and to more than 32 countries. The airport has one major runway which is 10,000 feet in length and more than 150 feet in width. The airport has a retail space of more than 114,000 square feet and more than 25,700 car parking spaces for its customers. STN also has 125 check in desks and approximately 110 aircraft parking stands.
The London Stansted Airport is a major contributor to the economy with a count of more than 10,000 employees. The airport is dedicated to environmentally friendly practices and became the 1st airport in the United Kingdom to receive ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certification in addition to meeting the Carbon Trust Standard. Furthermore, the airport recycled 57.2% of its waste during the 2011 year.
The London Stansted Airport offers customers various parking options including 2,500 short term spaces, midterm parking spaces and more than 8,000 long term spaces, all of which are located close to the terminals. Customers are also provided with a courtesy bus shuttle service and valet parking options.
