Playa Hermosa, GuanacasteDistance from Liberia International Airport: 25.1km
Playa Hermosa is a quiet community, and its calm beach is ideal for ocean swimming. As a recent center of Costa Rica’s real estate boom, the Hermosa region is home to many popular beaches and hilltop condominiums. Both foreigners and Costa Ricans flock to the dry and sun-drenched climate. If you are looking for adventure, Hermosa offers some of the best scuba diving in the country. Kayaking, boat tours, and snorkeling are also great activity options. To the north, the Papagayo Gulf peninsula borders Santa Rosa National Park, one of the largest tropical dry forest conservation areas in the world, and Playa de Coco (located 7 km away) hosts the area’s main restaurants, souvenir shops, and nightlife.
OcotalDistance from Liberia International Airport: 25.7km
If you are interested in a quiet and natural get-away, Ocotal is a wonderful option. Its natural tide pools and large bay make the Ocotal Beach a favorite for many. The area is also famous for outstanding sport fishing and scuba diving. With a location near Playa del Coco, Ocotal remains quite, but it is not completely cut off from nearby access to ATMs, Internet, and souvenir shopping.
Playa PotreroDistance from Liberia International Airport: 68.3km
At the heart of Costa Rica’s Gold Coast, Potrero’s enormous bay is partially protected by the Flamingo Peninsula, and Playa Potrero is a great beach for swimming. The crescent-shaped bay sits amidst a markedly Costa Rican village with typical restaurants that specialize in fresh seafood from local fishermen. Beaches to the north of Potrero include Playa Penca, Playa Preita, and Sugar Beach. Playa Flamingo and Conchal are glamorous beaches to the south. Most activities in the Potrero area are ocean activities such as sport fishing, snorkeling, and kayaking.
TamarindoDistance from Liberia International Airport: 67.4km
Tamarindo Beach is famous for sunsets on the Pacific, a healthy party scene, beginner and intermediate surfing conditions, and dozens of international restaurants. Much of the area has changed since the sleepy fishing village rapidly became a favorite get-away for North Americans (sometimes referred to as Playa “Tamagringo.”) Yet despite new development, Tamarindo remains an excellent beach with the additional advantage of close proximity to other fantastic beaches (including Playa Langosta, Playa Avellanas, and Playa Grande.) In response to a growing sentiment that Tamarindo did not budget appropriate infrastructure investments, the region’s municipality has re-focused on environmental protection. As a result of efforts by local government and businesses, Tamarindo has dramatically improved its water quality and beach cleanliness over the last year.
FlamingoDistance from Liberia International Airport: 64.7km
With its wonderfully scenic white sand beach and private marina, Playa Flamingo was one of Costa Rica’s first beaches to receive international attention. It has continued to be one of the most exclusive destinations in Costa Rica. Not much space for development is left on Flamingo’s narrow peninsula, but there are plenty of open views to the bay and setting sun. Snorkeling and diving expeditions are easily arranged in the area, and if you have interest in a long stay, there is an excellent language school. Most of the area’s nightlife is found in Brasillito, Potrero, or Tamarindo (a 30 minute drive.)
Playa AvellanasDistance from Liberia International Airport: 73.9km
Located 15 km south of Tamarindo, Playa Avellanas is locally known as “Little Hawaii.” Off shore waves can reach up to 18 feet, making Avellanas an ideal surfing destination for experienced surfers. The Avellanas area does not feature much of a town. Most visitors will stay near Tamarindo and make day trips to Avellanas for a tranquil beach experience. However, the day trip trend is changing as luxurious resorts move to Avellanas. Hacienda Pinella Golf Resort and the soon to be completed, 300 room, J.W. Marriot Resort will make Avellanas one of Costa Rica’s premier luxury destinations.
Playa ConchalDistance from Liberia International Airport: 64.9km
Without a doubt, Playa Conchal is Costa Rica’s most picturesque beach. With gleaming, white crushed seashells and turquoise waters, Playa Conchal is both refreshing and relaxing. The closest town to Playa Conchal is Brasilito. However, Tamarindo is only a 20-minute drive to the south, and Potrero is 15 minutes to the north. Conchal makes an ideal day trip from either location. In Conchal, it is possible to rent snorkeling gear and jet skis, buy souvenirs, and drink a refreshing beverage from local vendors. The luxurious Paradysis Playa Conchal Resort owns much of the beach’s surrounding land, but all beaches in Costa Rica are public. An entrance to Conchal can be found via Brasillito Beach.
Playa PanamaDistance from Liberia International Airport: 19.8km
Near Playa Hermosa lies the dark-sand beach and calm, blue waters of Playa Panama. Recent developments to the south (in Hermosa) and to the north (in Papagayo) have spread to Playa Panama. A few high-end resorts have now built projects along the shores. With close proximity to the bustling town of Playa de Coco, the golf course at the Four Seasons, and numerous sport fishing and scuba diving outfits, guests at Playa Panama have a range of activity options.
