Since the airport is located seven miles from downtown Houston, there is never a shortage of things to do or see in the area – attractions for all ages! Transportation needn’t be a problem either because there are buses, shuttle services, taxis and courtesy vans all waiting to serve travelers.
The Space Center Houston, located 17 miles from the airport, offers a wide array of activities for all ages. The Space After Dark program – designed for tourists and out-of-town visitors – offers hands-on, under-the stars activities for children of all ages. Visitors interested in exhibits can view 40 Leonardo da Vinci machines; the Space Center Plaza, which offers various exhibits; the Astronaut Gallery, which features a huge collection of spacesuits; and a trip inside an International Space Station. The visit can be topped off with lunch with a NASA astronaut.
Children’s Museum of Houston
Named the #1 children’s museum in the nation by Parents magazine, the Children’s Museum of Houston is located less than 12 miles from William P. Hobby Airport and offers something for children and adults. From the Invention Convention where kids can create and design their own contraptions to the stimulation Tot Spot for little ones, this museum has it all. The How Does it Work? section satisfies even the most inquisitive person. The museum also offers a free Family Night on Thursday.
Also acknowledged by Parents magazine as one of the nation’s ten best zoos is the Houston Zoo. This 55-acre zoo, located 13 miles from the airport, has more than 6,000 exotic animals representing over 800 different species. The zoo also includes the African Forest, a new addition featuring rhinos, chimps, giraffes and other African species. Other exciting parts of the zoo are the Reptile House, the Wildlife Carousal and the Carnivores exhibit, which will show you lions and tigers and bears to your heart’s content!
1940 Air Terminal Museum
If you’re into performing arts, you’ll love what Houston has to offer! The Theater District, located in downtown Houston, offers a performance extravaganza that spans 17 blocks and offers almost 13,000 seats. You’ll be able to choose from the latest and greatest performance or some old time classic favorites.
Visitors interested in historical sites have many nearby options, including Glenwood Cemetery, located 12 miles from the airport; the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, located less than two miles from the airport; Sam Houston Park, located 12 miles from the airport; and the Julia Ideson Library, also 12 miles away. Inside the 3-story, 66,000-square foot library is the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, which has more than 4.5 million photos of historical events and life in Houston. If you want to take a break from all this sight-seeing, you can catch a movie at the beautiful Landmark River Oaks Theatre, located 13 miles from the airport.
