Piedmont Triad International Airport
Piedmont Triad International Airport

Piedmont Triad International Airport is located about 20 miles west of Greensboro, North Carolina. The airport began in 1927 when 112 acres of farmland was purchased from Paul and Helen Lindley. The airport was originally named Lindley Field. Although the airport temporarily closed in 1935 because of two near airplane collisions, it received passengers and flights two years later. When the airport reopened, passengers were greeted with a new terminal and airplanes received two paved runways that were 2,500 feet each. During World War II, the United States Army Air Corps controlled the airport. During this time, the Air Corps built a couple new buildings. After the World War II ended, the Greensboro-High Point Airport Authority, which owned the airport, focused on expanding facilities and services. Over 900 acres was purchased for future expansion. New facilities were constructed, runways were lengthened, and a new control air traffic tower was built as well as a new terminal. A number of years later, the leadership of the airport recognized that a new terminal had to be built in order to handle current and future air traffic and passengers. In 1982, the current passenger terminal opened as well as a new hotel on airport property. Over the course of time, the airport has received a few name changes. In addition to being named Lindley Field, the airport has been named Greensboro-High Point Airport and Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem Regional Airport. In 1987, it was renamed Piedmont Triad International Airport.
