About Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt International Airport is the third busiest airport on the continent (and one of the busiest in the world), and some 56 million people pass through its doors every year. While people come from around the globe to explore the attractions of this world-class city on vacation, many visitors are business travelers stopping by for meetings, international trade fairs and other events. No matter the reason for your trip, there are plenty of hotels near Frankfurt International Airport to make your stay convenient and enjoyable. Stay at the Holiday Inn Express just 15 minutes from the hub (you can take advantage of the guests shuttle service to get back and forth), or reserve a room at the luxurious InterContinental Frankfurt, which is only a few minutes by foot from Frankfurt Central Station.

But don't head straight to your hotel room when you arrive - take some time to check out the amenities of the airport. The site spans more than 8 square miles and houses two terminals, where you'll find an array of restaurants, shops, conference rooms, currency exchange centers and other establishments. The highlight is The Squaire, a half-square-mile gathering place within a modern, glass-paneled building that features upscale dining options, boutiques, hotels and corporate offices.

Welcome to Frankfurt

There are plenty of reasons to visit Frankfurt. Many travelers also come to this city for work. The city is, after all, the business hub of the country and the financial center for all of Europe. In fact, it's home to the German Stock Exchange as well as the European Central Bank, the overseeing treasury for the euro. It also attracts entrepreneurs and employees from around the world with massive global trade events such as the Frankfurt Book Fair and Frankfurt Auto Show.

But a trip to this city isn't all about stuffy business affairs. As the largest city in the state of Hesse and a destination known for its art, architecture and rich history, the location makes for a truly stimulating cultural experience. And there's more than just wealthy bankers here - free-spirited bohemians and corporate bigwigs live in harmony in this diverse locale, which is renowned for its divergent skylines (state-of-the-art skyscrapers contrast historic old buildings). Tourists often flock to River Main and Römerberg square, but an exploration of the outlying neighborhoods expose you to unique communities of friendly locals and delightful 19th century architecture.

Things to Do in Frankfurt

A night view of downtown FrankfurtAfter settling into Frankfurt International Airport hotels, guests can rent a car or hop on the U-Bahn to get to the downtown area and explore the top sites. To get the most out of one excursion, stop by Römerberg. This plaza, just west of Dom, spans a lengthy block and is a gathering spot for both locals and visitors. The central square is lined with displays of 14th and 15th century architecture, giving it an exquisite Medieval feel. It contains the remains of Roman settlements at the Archäologische Garten, the 12th century Alte Nikolaikirche church and the Gothic-style Wharfinger's Tower, and in winter the site becomes the home of the renowned Christmas market.

Frankfurt also has a stunning array of cultural and historical institutions, many of which can be found at the Museum Embankment along the Main river. Here, you can peruse the galleries and exhibits of the German Architecture Museum, German Film Museum, Liebieg House and Jewish Museum. Keep in mind that most museums are closed on Mondays, and each Saturday morning until noon the grounds of the Museum Embankment become a sprawling flea market.
