Tips for packing light
Whether you're doing some business travel or jet setting to a faraway destination for a family vacation, packing light may help your travel experience be a bit less stressful. Being smart about packing could mean that you won't have to check a bag, or it could ensure you that your checked bag won't be too heavy upon arriving to the airport. After all, nobody wants to lug around a bulky suitcase through the airport and all the way to their hotel. Here are a few common reasons for travel, and how you can pack light for them all:
A business trip
When you're traveling on business, you likely have to pack a few suits, ties and dress shoes. But instead of bringing multiple suits, pack only one suit jacket, and then a few different colored or patterned shirts that you can mix and match. Pick out a few tie options that go with the shirts as well.
Women need only bring one pair of black suit pants or a pencil skirt, with a few various shirts or blouses to pair with them. Pack one pair of neutral colored shoes that would go with any outfit you choose to wear. You can always change up your outfit with accessories like earrings, scarves and bracelets.
As for your laptop, ask yourself if you really need it. Maybe you can bring along a thin tablet instead, as this might suffice and take up much less space. If you're only going to be out of town on business travel for one or two days, you may not even want to bring your laptop at all. Instead, use the computers your hotel lobby offers.
It can be easy to overpack if you've never been to the destination before. Depending on where your cruise is traveling to, you may need to bring extra clothing for when the sun goes down, as it could get a bit chillier. Instead of packing a winter coat, bring a few layers that you can put on if you get cold.
Cruises typically have formal nights during which the men wear tuxedos and the women wear evening gowns. These outfits can be tough to squish into a suitcase, so what are you to do? Well, there are several cruise lines that actually allow men to rent their tuxedos. You can also bring along a nice suit coat and a shirt and tie, which will be formal enough for the evening.
When it comes to the women getting dressed up, it's the little black dress to the rescue. This clothing must-have can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Wear a sweater over the dress and pair it with some flats for a casual look, or put on a pair of heels and a chunky necklace to dress it up a little. This piece can be transformed into so many different looks.
A family vacation
When traveling with kids, it can be extremely difficult to pack light. After all, you want to be prepared for any and every scenario that might arise. You can try putting clothing into compression bags, which allows you to take a lot of garments without overfilling your suitcases. You may also want to roll your clothing instead of folding. Doing so takes up much less space. Plus, rolling minimizes wrinkles.
As you're packing, ask yourself if you really need each item that you're putting in your suitcase. For instance, if you and your family are headed to Hawaii and would like to do some snorkeling, it may be in your best interest to rent the snorkels there rather than packing them.
